By Travis M. Smith | KBEC Sports

Union Hill scored first, but it was the Avalon Eagles who scored most often in a 60-38 home win Friday night.

The loss was the first of the season for the Union Hill Bulldogs, while the victory improved Avalon to 3-0 with all three wins coming in non-district play.

The Bulldogs opened the game with a 10-yard touchdown pass with 4:42 to play in the first quarter. It took a little over two minutes for the Eagles to respond, but they did when Miguel Padron capped the quick drive with a 5-yard touchdown run.

Union Hill again struck first in the second quarter to build a 14-0 lead, only to have the Eagles add two touchdowns in the final two minutes of the first half on a 28-yard pitch-and-catch from Padron to Rhett Newton followed by a 7-yard touchdown pass from Newton to Padron.

The two late scores sent the Eagles into the halftime locker room up 24-14. Avalon then hung four touchdowns on the Bulldogs in the third quarter and Padron capped the game with a 14-yard touchdown run to complete the 60-38 win.

Padron finished the game 14-of-26 for 205 yards and four touchdowns to two interceptions. He also added 20 carries for a game-high 209 yards and three touchdowns.

Rhett Newton led all Avalon receivers with 8 catches for 120 yards and three touchdowns, while Padron (1-7) and Justin Dean (1-15) also hauled in scores.

Marcos Kinser led the Eagles defense with 13 total tackles, one interception and one fumble recovery. His fumble recovery was one of four for Avalon. Kinser was also a perfect 6-for-6 on extra-point kicks.

The Eagles will face (1-2) Walnut Springs at 7:30 p.m. in Avalon. The game will also be Homecoming for AHS.
