Buchanan becomes first volleyball player voted KBEC Sports Player of the Week

KBEC Sports report

Fans of Ellis County athletics cast over 400,000 votes over the past four days in the return of the KBEC Sports Player of the Week poll. And, for the first time, a non-football student-athlete claimed the weekly recognition.

Midlothian sophomore Kenna Buchanan received 53.47% of the 454,736 total votes cast — a whopping 243,137 votes.

The 5-foot-8 outside hitter was nominated following a week in which she recorded 38 kills and 30 digs in matches against Waxahachie (2-3) and Aledo (3-1). Buchanan currently has 307 kills and 178 digs for the (6-1) Lady Panthers, who were in action Friday at home against (5-7) Red Oak.

Ennis running back Devion Beasley and the Lion faithful gave Buchanan a run throughout the week. The junior finished with 45.07% (204,969) of the total vote.

Waxahachie running back Shawn Cherry (3,586, 0.79%) and Midlothian running back Dillon Lampkins (3,044, 0.67%) also received fan votes.

Buchanan will be presented with a commemorative KBEC Sports Player of the Week certificate at a date to be announced. She will also a special guest on The Press Box, a weekly sports talk radio show that airs live from 6-7 p.m. on Monday nights on KBEC 1390AM/99.1FM.

The voting totals came up just shy of the record highs set following week 11 of the 2019 high school football season. That week saw 589,055 votes cast with 312,205 going to Palmer grad, Dylan Tyree.

The KBEC Sports Player of the Week poll is presented by The Press Box and KBEC 1390AM/99.1FM.

To nominate a student-athlete for the weekly recognition, send his or her name, grade-level and statistics for the week to tsmith@kbec.com before 5 p.m. Monday.
