Seven runners inside their respective top-10s resulted in a district championship for the Waxahachie Lady Indians and a strong performance by their male counterparts Thursday.
A new school record by Emma Curry highlighted the group’s efforts in the District 7-6A cross-country championships held at Lynn Creek Park in Grand Prairie. The junior finished the 5,000-meter course in 18:23.14, which was more than one-minute faster than second-place Marissa Gross (19:34.52) of South Grand Prairie.
Alyson Moore (3rd, 19:34.52), Cori Morgan (4th, 20:03.91-PR), Keeley Hearron (6th, 20:47.47) and Karina Huerta (21:00.24) also finished inside the top-10 for the now-back-to-back 7-6A district champion Lady Indians. The district title is also the third consecutive for the Lady Indians cross-country program, with the first coming as a member of District 10-5A in 2017.
Charley Hearron (16th, 21:41.04) and Mariel Camargo (26th, 22:17.51) rounded out the Lady Indians team effort Thursday in the 50-runner field. Waxahachie finished with 23 points as a team to best the 46 tallied by Mansfield and 84 amassed by South Grand Prairie. DeSoto (102), Mansfield Summit (121), Mansfield Lake Ridge (163) and Cedar Hill (197) finished fourth through seventh, respectively.
With the win, the Lady Indians qualified for the 6A Region I championships to be held Monday, Oct. 28 at Mae Simmons Park in Lubbock.
As for the Indians, Julius Luna and Sam Molina led the way for the group with a pair of top-10 finishes Thursday. Waxahachie ultimately finished fourth with 104 points in the varsity boys’ division of the 7-6A championships behind Mansfield (27), Mansfield Summit (82) and South Grand Prairie (89).
Luna placed sixth in a time of 16:53.87, which was just off of the pace set by Mansfield runner James Williams (16:14.85).
Molina crossed the finish line in eighth place in a time of 16:57.91.
Dakoda Moreno (18th, 17:38.00), Lucas Molina (33rd, 18:07.48), Joseph Quilbio (39th, 18:33.55) and Brian Mackel (46th, 19:07.82) also competed for the Indians in the 53-competitor field.
