Davis pair fuels Red Oak girls’ rout of Midlothian

A double-double and season debut propelled the Red Oak Lady Hawks to a District 14-5A victory Friday night at home against in-county-rival Midlothian.

No. 9 (15-4, 2-0) Red Oak scored 32 points in the first half and cruised through the second half for a convincing 51-22 win against the visiting (10-8, 1-1) Lady Panthers.

The win was the 10th over the past 11 games for the Lady Hawks.

Following the win, Red Oak head girls’ basketball coach Darren Eubanks told KBEC Sports that his team played well and pointed to the number of turnovers forced by the Lady Hawks as a key to the victory.

“We made them (Midlothian) play faster than they wanted to play and we knocked down some shots to build up some confidence in the first half,” Eubanks added. “I’m really happy about the way we played.”

Sophomore standout Bre Davis tallied an impressive 12-point, 11-rebound double-double to lead the Lady Hawk attack. She also dished out a team-best five assists.

Senior Deja Davis drilled four three-pointers — including three in the first quarter — to post a team-high 14 points with four assists in her season debut.

“It was good to have her back,” Eubanks said. “She is a senior, too, so that is going to help us out in the long run.”

Fellow senior Micah Cooper added seven points and a team-high four steals.

Red Oak also received scoring from Kinzie Taplin (4 points), Micah Cooper (4), Amyia Bowie (4), Aniyah Johnson (3), Halei Parks (2) and Markeya Mack (1). The Lady Hawks finished the game 11-for-14 (78.6%) from the charity stripe.

No Lady Panther reached double-digits in the loss, as Kadia Ward led all Midlothian scorers with seven points and Maykayla Jackson had six. Elise Jones added four points, Landri Schreier scored three and Riley Crawford chipped in two.

UP NEXT

Red Oak returns to action against Troy in the annual Sandra Meadows Classic hosted by Duncanville ISD. Tip-off is slated for 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 26.

“We still have a long way to go and this is a long season,” Eubanks said. “Hopefully, we can stay healthy, have a good break and everybody come back and finish out the district and get into the playoffs.”

Midlothian will look to rebound Friday, Jan. 3 against Waco University. The Lady Panthers will tip-off that game at 8 p.m. in Waco.
