Ennis wins cat fight to open District 8-5A slate

By Travis M. Smith | KBEC Sports

The unofficial battle of the Lions went to Ennis in resounding fashion Friday night at Lions Stadium in Kaufman.

Ennis (2-1, 1-0 in 8-5A) carried a 28-0 lead into the half and never saw its lead threatened in the second half of the 49-14 District 8-5A opener.

Devion Beasley scored twice the first half from 3 and 5 yards in the first and second quarters respectively. He then added a third rushing score with 10:10 to play in the third quarter — this time from 10 yards out — to put the game away early.

Beasley finished the win with 105 yards and three touchdowns on 12 carries (8.8 YPC), pacing the Lion offense to 275 rushing yards on 33 attempts (8.3 YPC) as a team. Collin Drake added eight carries for 66 yards and two touchdowns, while Camden Castillo (8-34), Dyllan Santos (3-30), Jacob Duke (1-20, TD) and Karon Smith (1-20) also contributed to the ground attack.

Drake was near-perfect through the air, completing 11-of-his-12 passes for 150 yards and one 20-yard touchdown pass to Karon Smith with 54 seconds to play in the first half.

Laylon Spencer, who finished second in the week two KBEC Sports Player of the Week poll, again led all Ennis receivers with 4 catches for 54 yards. Santos (3-46) and Azain Brown (3-30) also had multiple catches for the Lions.

Ennis will host North Forney for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff Friday at Lion Memorial Stadium.
