Write it in stone: The Ferris Yellowjackets will be in the postseason.
The Ferris Yellowjackets will have to find a way to slow the Glen Rose Tigers hurry-up offense in order to hoist a District 4-4A championship trophy. Head coach Brandon Layne and company are certainly capable.
Ferris returns 18 lettermen from the 2018 team that finished as bi-district finalists in 2018 with a 6-4 record (3-1 in 4-4A).
Among those returners is tight end Matthew Nunez, who was named to the DCTF 4A all-state second team following the 2018 season. Nunez caught 41 passes during his junior campaign for 1,100 yards and 12 touchdowns. He averaged 110.0 yards per game and 26.8 yards per catch en route to hauling in 74.5 percent of the Yellowjackets completions during his junior season.
Nunez also caught 37 passes for 566 yards and seven scores as a sophomore. He will now be on the receiving end of a new play-caller, too, as receiver-turner-quarterback Nate Aguinaga is slated to start under center for the Yellowjackets.
The biggest loss to the Ferris offense came with the graduation of Damian Edwards, an All-Ellis County Football Player of the Year finalist. Edwards rushed for 1,377 yards and 18 touchdowns on 203 carries in 2018. Now at Cisco Junior College, Edwards surpassed the 1,000-yard plateau in each of his final three seasons with Ferris (1,257; 1,882; 1,377).
