The Ennis Lions celebrated their baseball seniors on Friday with pregame festivities and a lopsided district victory.
Ennis outslugged visiting Waco University 12 hits to 6 and capitalized on four errors and eight walks for the 16-6 run-rule win.
The Lions plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning on a Lorenzo Leija single and wild pitch. Ennis then used hits by Ryan Todd, Jeremiah Sanchez, Clayton Jenkins and Leija to hang a 10-spot in the bottom of the second inning. Todd recorded an RBI single and a double and scored two runs in the inning.
The trio of Eric Stanley (.474 BA), Jenkins (.431 BA, 18 RBIs, 11 2B) and Leija (.400 BA) continue to pace the Lions’ offense.
University eventually scored three runs in the top of the third and fourth innings, only to have Ennis plate four more runs in the fourth to put the 10-run mercy rule into play.
Aidan Castillo (3-0, 1.77 ERA) picked up the win for the Lions on the bump. He struck out three and didn’t allow a base runner over his two innings of work.
Head coach Kellen Monreal has the Lions sitting atop the District 14-5A standings with a 3-1 mark through their first four district games. The Lions are 11-6-2 overall.
Corsicana, Cleburne and Joshua are all 3-2 and tied for second, having played one more game than the Lions.
Red Oak holds the sixth spot in the district standings after the Hawks defeated Corsicana, 3-1, on Friday.
