Game of the Week preview: Midlothian to host Joshua in 5-5A opener

KBEC Sports report

Thanks to a nine-team district, the Midlothian Panthers begin District 5-5A action in week three.

And they’ll have the luxury of doing so at home against (0-2) Joshua.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Midlothian ISD Multipurpose Stadium.

Friday’s meeting is also the week three KBEC Sports Game of the Week.

LAST TIME OUT

The Panthers throttled Killeen Shoemaker at home in week two, 51-20.

With the defensive unit already in midseason form, the Midlothian offense scored six consecutive touchdowns across the second and third quarters on its way to 506 total yards. Shoemaker was limited to just 207 total yards of offense.

Ethan Hill scampered for 175 yards on nine carries to lead the Panthers ground attack, while Laine Martin added eight carries for 82 yards and two touchdowns.

TATER’S TAKEAWAYS

Tater Beard, who has severed as the play-by-play voice of Midlothian Panthers football for the past five seasons, compiled six takeaways following the win against Shoemaker.

1. Ethan Hill ran downhill all night and busted two big runs for over 50 yards

2. The Panther Offensive Line is looking great and only getting stronger with the hopeful return of Blake Cellars (6-foot-3, 240, senior) this week.

3. The defense is playing at an extremely high level behind standouts J.T. Cavender, Nick Pollard, Marshall Hodges and Kaleb Tompkins.

4. The defensive backs, dubbed

“The Island Boys” were led by Nathan Humphreys interception and good coverage by all others.

5. The Panthers have opened the passing game up. Quarterback Tate Corbin is running the flex with confidence and poise.

6. The Panthers have been able to get a lot of players into the first two games. This can only help the depth of the team going into district play.
