Ellis County Sports report
Italy quarterback Gared Wood was quite literally born to lead the Gladiators. After a sophomore season primarily serving as a running back, the junior has moved behind center and is shining as the Gladiators QB1.
Wood accounted for 8 total touchdowns against Itasca en route to being named the Methodist Midlothian Medical Center Player of the Week for Ellis County in week seven of the high school football season.
Wood completed 12-of-his-14 passes for 294 yards and 7 touchdowns in a 52-0 District 7-2A drubbing of the Wampus Cats on Friday. He added a team-high 11 carries for 87 yards and 1 touchdown.
Senior wideout Dredick Owens pulled in 5 of Wood’s touchdown passes on a night where he finished with 6 catches for 188 yards. Eric Solis (1-37) and KT Cockran (1-16) caught the other two Wood touchdown passes.
Wood’s performance improved the Gladiators to 4-3 on the season and 3-0 in 7-2A. Italy will clinch a postseason berth with its next win, which could come at home Friday against former Italy head coach Craig Horn and the Axtell Longhorns.
