Big plays and an even bigger second quarter propelled the Life Waxahachie Mustangs past Nevada Community on Friday.

The Mustangs compiled 386 total yards of offense and scored the first seven touchdowns of the game in the 48-7 non-district home win. The victory improved the Mustangs to 3-1 on the season.

Life Waxahachie running back Christian May got the scoring party started with a 67-yard touchdown run on the first play of the Mustangs second possession. His scamper to paydirt with 4:40 on the clock in the first quarter was the first of three on the evening for May, who finished the game with eight carries for 105 yards and three touchdowns.

May also scored a 2-yard (8:18, 2Q) and 12-yard touchdown (2:56, 2Q). Those two scores were bookended by a 23-yard touchdown pass from Cody Oder to Sir Michael Veasley and a 70-yard punt return for a score by Gage Mayfield.

The touchdown run by Mayfield occurred with 38 seconds to play in the first half and put the Mustangs up 34-0. It also capped a 27-point second quarter for the Mustangs.

Mayfield then added a 63-yard touchdown run on the first play of the second half after the Mustangs recovered an onside kick.

The final Life Waxahachie score came when Oder connected with Tony Evans for a 12-yard score to cap a four-play, 24-yard drive.

Oder finished the game 3-of-7 passing for 54 yards and two scores, while Mayfield completed 1-of-his-3 passes for 38 yards. The latter also added two carries for 68 yards and a touchdown.

In addition to May’s 105-yard performance, Sir Michael Veasley rushed six times for 56 yards and caught one pass for a 23-yard touchdown. Evans led all Life Waxahachie receivers with three catches for 69 yards.

Xavier Boose (9 total tackles, 1 tackle-for-loss), Jamal Whitman (7TT, 1TFL, sack) and Gaberil Tamayo (8TT, 2.5TFL) spearheaded the Mustangs defense that limited Nevada Community to 221 total yards and forced two fumbles.

Defensive lineman Anthony Barnes recorded seven total tackles, one tackle-for-loss and an interception, while Kendrick Green added a sack to his six tackles and Trevon Bramtley (4 TT, 1.5 TFL) blocked a punt.

Life Waxahachie returns to action at 7:30 p.m. Friday at home against Farmersville. The game will include homecoming festivities.
