Maypearl’s Hamby selected as week four KBEC Sports Player of the Week

A two-athlete race came down to the wire in the week four KBEC Sports Player of the Week poll and just under 3,000 votes decided the winner.

When the final votes were tallied, Maypearl running back Grant Hamby received 18,063 (50.71%) of the 35,618 votes cast in the week-four poll, edging the 15,880 votes cast for Midlothian Heritage wide receiver Jay Wilkerson (44.58%).

Hamby scored on a 51-yard and 16-yard rushing touchdown in the fourth quarter to pull the Maypearl Panthers within the 39-29 against Fort Worth Christian on Friday, Sept. 20.

Hamby ended the game with 181 yards and two touchdowns on 24 carries.

Hamby will be presented with a commemorative KBEC Sports Player of the Week certificate at a date to be announced.

As for Wilkerson, the Heritage senior finally posted his breakout game of the 2019 season, hauling in five passes for 187 yards and three touchdowns. Wilkerson, who holds several Division-I Power 5 offers, caught touchdown passes of 67, 47 and 65 yards in the second half to pull the Jaguars within one possession, 29-26 with 11:47 to play in the fourth quarter. Heritage went on to complete the comeback with a score late in the game for the 33-29 victory.

Red Oak running back CJ Palmer (1,557 votes, 4.37%) and Life Waxahachie running back Christian May (118 votes, 0.33%) also received votes in the weekly poll.
