The Midlothian Heritage football program will have a new offensive eye in the sky during the 2020 season, as offensive coordinator Cooper Crowell has accepted a promotion within north Texas.
Crowell was officially named the new head football coach at North Lamar High School in late April. He told the North Lamar Panther Press that he looks “forward to hitting the ground running and getting the football program moving in the right direction.”
He added, “There is massive potential here and we are going to wake the sleeping giant!”
Crowell had spent the previous six seasons as the offensive coordinator at Midlothian Heritage under head coach Lee Wiginton. He had been the only offensive coordinator in program history.
The Heritage offense, led by Crowell and Wiginton, has already produced several highly-recruited alumni, such as Jack Freeman (OL, University of Houston), Landon Ledbetter (QB, Henderson State), Langston Anderson (WR, Oklahoma State University) and Jay Wilkerson (WR, Washington State University).
Thanks to the offensive scheme and talent around him, Ledbetter tossed 126 career touchdown which, at the time, ranked 10th all-time in Texas high school football history, according to Dave Campbell’s Texas Football.
The Crowell-led offense recorded over 5,200 total yards of offense in each of the past three seasons. The highwater mark came in 2018 when the Jaguars averaged 425.6 yards per game (5,533 yards) on their way to an 11-2 overall record. Heritage tallied 3,467 passing yards and 2,066 rushing yards during that campaign, while also outscoring the opposition 564-293 (43.4 ppg to 22.5).
The Heritage football team advanced to the 4A regional quarterfinal round for the first time in Midlothian ISD history this past season, ultimately finishing with a 9-5 overall record.
During his time with the program, Crowell helped the Jaguars to three 4A district championships, four playoff appearances and one undefeated regular season (10-0, 2017) over each of the four varsity seasons in program history. He was also named the Dave Campbell’s Texas Football Assistant Coach of the Week in 2017, while twice serving as a guest speaker at the DFW Coaches Clinic (2016) and DFW Nike Coach of the Year Conference (2017).
Crowell departs from Midlothian with his wife, Jill, and daughters, Kingsley (7) and Carolina (3).
“We are excited that Cooper Crowell has accepted the head football coaching position at North Lamar ISD for the 2020-2021 school year,” stated North Lamar ISD Superintendent Kelli Stewart in an official release. “Coach Crowell has an extensive football background, and I feel confident that he will be an asset to our team.”
