Ellis County Sports report
Jordan Soto drilled a game-winning overtime field goal to lift No. 3 Midlothian Heritage over in-county rival Ennis on Friday.
The senior placekicker also connected on four other field goal attempts and two extra-point kicks during the thrilling 38-35 Jaguar win. That effort led to Soto being named the Methodist Midlothian Medical Center Player of the Week for Ellis County in week eight of the high school football season.
Soto is the second Jaguar to receive the recognition, joining quarterback Carter Rutenbar after his stellar performance in week 1 against Stephenville.
Soto connected on first-half field goals of 45 and 31 yards to go with a successful extra-point kick to cut the Ennis lead to 21-19 at the half. The senior then converted on a fourth-quarter PAT and 22-yard game-tying field goal with 2 seconds to play. The latter tied the game at 35-all.
Midlothian Heritage took the opening drive of the only overtime frame and forced Soto into a 39-yard field goal attempt.
The junior drilled the kick and the Jaguar defense held on the ensuing Lion drive for the 38-35 victory.
Soto improved to 8-of-12 on field goal attempts on the season with a long of 50 yards. He is 37-of-38 on extra-point attempts.
Midlothian Heritage remained a perfect 7-0 on the season and 4-0 in District 5-5A Division II.
The Jaguars also officially clinched a 5-5A DII playoff berth with the victory. Midlothian Heritage could secure the outright district crown with 2 wins and an Everman loss over its final 3 games. Everman, Ennis and Mansfield Summit currently all sit at 3-1 in the 5-5A DII standings, though the Jaguars hold the tiebreakers over both Ennis and Summit.
Midlothian Heritage will host (2-5, 0-4) Corsicana at home Friday. The Jaguars will then travel to (4-3, 2-2) Arlington Seguin on Thursday, Oct. 26, before ending the regular season at home against (5-2, 3-1) Everman at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 13.
