Nyk Madison capped a whirlwind of a week with a double-double to lead the Midlothian Panthers to a season-opening basketball win Saturday.
The Panthers raced out to a 37-17 halftime lead against Sachse and then expanded that advantage to 26 points by the end of the third quarter. They eventually held on to win, 57-49.
Madison led all scorers with 30 points and added 10 rebounds, which came just three days after the 6-foot-6 forward signed with Division-II Oklahoma Chrisitan University.
Jackson Tollefsbol added seven points and four assists in the Midlothian win, while Kelton Williams (7 points) and Omari Bobbitt also contributed.
Corbin Breen, Roderick Reeder and Haylen Mattiza each added two points for Midlothian.
The Panthers checked in at No. 14 in the first 5A poll compiled by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches, which will be the officially recognized statewide poll of KBEC Sports.
Red Oak is the only other 5A boys’ team in Ellis County ranked inside the TABC top-25.
Before the season tipped off, head coach Steven Middleton hinted to KBEC Sports that this year’s team could be special — very, very special.
Here’s to hoping his gut is right. Because it couldn’t have started much better for the Panthers.
Midlothian returns to action at 8 p.m. Tuesday at home against North Mesquite.
