WAXAHACHIE — Nelson University outfielder Andrew Ortiz has officially caught the eyes of professional scouts and clubs after being named as an All-Star in the prestigious Coastal Plain League. The now-senior continued the hot streak that started on campus in Waxahachie into the second half of one of the country’s top summer collegiate leagues.
Ortiz is a Weatherford High graduate and outfielder for the Lexington County Blowfish. He was named as a first-team All-Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC) standout this past spring with Nelson University.
Ortiz ended the summer season with a .299 batting average over 32 games and 117 at-bats. He drove home 21 runs, collected 35 hits and 9 doubles, and posted a 34:19 BB:K rate.
The Coastal Plain League (CPL) is highly regarded by Baseball America and Perfect Game for its competitive atmosphere and player development opportunities. Not any average Joe or collegiate ballplayer can just roll up to a summer league dugout with a glove and $10 in cash to pay for an umpire to play — this is an invite-only kinda deal.
“Known for his smooth left-handed swing, Ortiz registered multi-hit games against premier CPL programs like the Macon Bacon and Florence Flamingos,” stated a Nelson University Athletics release. “His timely hits and plate discipline, including clutch RBI efforts and run-scoring performances, were pivotal in the Blowfish’s midseason surge.”
The Nelson Athletics release added, “The CPL All-Star nod was a significant milestone for Ortiz, who now adds summer league national recognition to his resume. Competing in a wooden-bat league that mirrors the conditions of minor league baseball, Ortiz has shown he can thrive under pressure while showcasing tools that translate to the next level.”
With his senior season at Nelson approaching, Ortiz’s momentum and experience gained this summer have set the stage for a potentially draft-worthy campaign in Waxahachie.
