The New Year began with a new milestone for Life Waxahachie head boys’ basketball coach Eddie Berumen.
Following a short trip down US Highway 67, the Mustangs defeated Midland Greenwood, 50-38, in their opening game of the annual Glen Rose Lions Club Tournament for Berumen’s 300th career victory.
All 300 of those victories have come at Life Waxahachie, too. Berumen joined the staff as the school’s first-ever head boys’ basketball coach in 2008 following a stint as a varsity assistant under head coach David Milson at Cedar Hill High School.
During his time leading the Mustangs, Berumen has guided the Life Waxahachie program from Class 1A and into a Class 4A power.
Life Waxahachie has averaged better than 20 wins per season and has made the playoffs in 10 of the past 11 seasons. Berumen-led teams have won four outright district championships, eight bi-district titles, seven area championships and have appeared in the regional tournament an astounding six times.
A Life Schools press release notes that Berumen “has elevated the Life High School Waxahachie basketball program to a well-known team of young men often noted for their character and sportsmanship on and off the court.
“While pleased with the 300-win milestone, coach Berumen is more motivated by the opportunity to instill character development in the young men that go through his program each year,” the release notes. “Using the game of basketball, coach Berumen teaches valuable life lessons and skills, impacting thousands of athletes throughout his career.”
Berumen, a LifeLeader on campus, stated that his focus remains on both winning basketball games and helping young student-athletes grow into exceptional community leaders.
“I am thankful for the opportunity to work for such a supportive organization. I would like to thank my wife, Dawn, and children, Logan, Maddie and Ryan, for their support and the time they sacrifice to allow me to be a coach,” stated Berumen in the Life Schools release. “Thank you to all of our assistant coaches and their families, Life School administration, faculty and staff, stakeholders and board members; to all current and former players, managers, cheerleaders, sports medicine teams, trainers, families and fans. This accomplishment was a team effort, and I’m humbled and honored by this achievement.”
The Mustangs are currently 17-8 on the season and ranked No. 16 in the TABC 4A poll. They return to action at 7 p.m. Tuesday at home against Crandall.
Life Waxahachie then begins District 17-4A play at 7:30 p.m. on the road Friday, Jan. 17 against (19-4) Ferris.
