A second volleyball player was selected as the KBEC Sports Player of the week following a record-setting and jawdropping vote total.

Midlothian Heritage senior Elizabeth Schmidt received 440,434 (49.73%) of the 885,686 total votes, just edging Palmer running back Bralen Lopez by 13,142 votes.

Schmidt helped the Jaguars to a pair of straight-set wins against Ferris and Godley. The 5-foot-8 outside hitter and team captain recorded 37 total kills, seven aces, 24 digs and four blocks over the two matches.

She leads the Jaguars with 312 kills, 60 aces, 214 digs and 32 total blocks on the season.

Schmidt joins Midlothian sophomore Kenna Buchanan as the only two volleyball student-athletes to ever win the KBEC Player of the Week fan vote.

Lopez finished with 48.24% of the fan vote. The 427,292 votes cast in his favor is the second-most all-time for any one student-athlete.

Italy running back Jaiden Barr (10,463 votes, 1.18%) and Life Waxahachie defensive back Shar’Juan Daniels (7,497 votes, 0.85%) also received votes in the poll.

The 885,686 votes cast blew by the previous record-high of 589,055 set following week 11 of the 2019 high school football season.

Schmidt’s vote total is also the most-ever for a student-athlete, besting the 312,205 votes cast in favor of Palmer grad Dylan Tyree in the same 2019 poll.

Schmidt will be presented with a commemorative KBEC Sports Player of the Week certificate at a date to be announced. She will also a special guest on The Press Box, a weekly sports talk radio show that airs live from 6-7 p.m. on Monday nights on KBEC 1390AM/99.1FM.

The KBEC Sports Player of the Week poll is presented by The Press Box and KBEC 1390AM/99.1FM.

To nominate a student-athlete for the weekly recognition, send his or her name, grade-level and statistics for the week to tsmith@kbec.com before 5 p.m. Monday.
