Padron tosses 8 TDs in Avalon football opener

AVALON — The Avalon Eagles opened the 2022 football season with a rout and eyes on the postseason.

Led by junior Erik Padron, the Eagles thumped visiting Methodist Children’s Home (Waco) on Thursday evening, 66-20. 

Padron completed 16-of-his-23 passes (69.6%) for 422 yards and a whopping eight touchdowns. He also added six carries for 43 yards and 10 total tackles — second only to the 16 total tackles recorded by junior Jake Ozymy. 

Ozymy had four catches for 123 yards and matched the team-high with three receiving touchdowns. He recorded the longest scoring grab of the game at 67 yards.

Colby Ornelas, a senior, led all receivers with six catches for 187 yards and three touchdowns. 

Ozymy and Padron each recorded an interception, while Ozymy (2) and Roman Palacios recorded fumbles.

UP NEXT

Avalon returns to action Thursday at home against (0-1) Bynum. The Bulldogs fell in their season opener, 66-21, to Cranfills Gap. 

Kickoff in Avalon is slated for 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
