The Red Oak boys’ soccer team held on for a 4-3 win at home against West Mesquite in the 5A Region II bi-district championship on Friday at Billy Goodloe Stadium.
The Hawks, now 15-3-6, finished third in District 14-5A behind district-champion (13-8-3, 9-1-2) Midlothian and (17-6-1, 8-3-1) Joshua. Corsicana finished fourth, a full two wins back of Red Oak. Cleburne, Ennis and Waco University rounded out the district standings with a combined five wins.
Red Oak entered the 5A playoffs after battling to win or draw in eight of its last nine matches. The only defeat in that span came Feb. 26 on the road against Joshua, 2-1. The Hawks outscored their opposition 21-14 during that span.
Sophomore Chris Deamon led the Hawks with 24 goals during the regular season. He also added seven assists for a team-best 55 points.
Dylan Vasquez (9), Sammy Benavidez (5) and Luis Bazaldua (5) were the next three goal scorers. Bazaldua recorded a team-high 23 assists and Benavidez tallied 10 more.
The Hawks will now face the winner of Whitehouse and Sulphur Springs in the 5A Region II area championship at a date, time and location to be determined.
