Red Oak’s Martinez accounts for over 300 yards, 6 TDs in Methodist Midlothian Player of the Week performance

Ellis County Sports report

Running back Chris Martinez accounted for over 300 yards of offense and 6 touchdowns to continue the Red Oak Hawks’ undefeated season. The crucial District 4-5A victory also officially secured a playoff spot for the Hawks.

Martinez rushed for 289 yards and five touchdowns in the 56-37 home victory against Killeen. He also caught 2 passes for 36 yards and a score.

That effort led to Martinez being named the Methodist Midlothian Medical Center Player of the Week for Ellis County in week nine of the high school football season.

Martinez helped the (8-0, 6-0) Hawks to a 33-21 halftime lead behind 192 yards and 3 touchdowns on 18 first-half carries.

The Killeen Kangaroos scored on the opening drive of the second half to pull within a single score, 33-28, with 9:39 to play in the third quarter.

Killeen had 280 total yards to that point, with just 24 coming on the ground. The Hawk defense limited the Kangaroos to 82 total yards of offense over the ensuing quarter and a half.

Meanwhile, Martinez and the Hawks ran wild.

Martinez ultimately rushed 29 times for 289 yards and 5 touchdowns, averaging nearly 10 yards per carry (9.97). He added a 17-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Reggie Moody Jr. to put the Hawks ahead for good, 42-28, with 3:52 to play in the third quarter.

The Hawks ultimately outgained the Kangaroos 588 total yards to 362 and 21 first downs to 12. Red Oak turned the football over 3 times (2 INTs, fumble).

Martinez has rushed for 970 yards and 7 touchdowns on 154 carries this season. He is averaging 121.3 yards per game to go along with 6.3 YPC. He has rushed for 7 touchdowns and crossed the 100-yard rushing plateau 5 times thus far.

Red Oak secured a 4-5A Division I playoff berth with the victory. With two regular season games to play, all signs still point toward the district championship being decided in week 11 when the (7-1, 6-0) Midlothian Panthers travel to Billy Goodloe Stadium for a 7 p.m. kickoff on Thursday, Nov. 2.

Red Oak faces (3-5, 1-5) Granbury on the road this Friday. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
