After over 80,000 votes, Waxahachie quarterback Campbell Sullivan edged Ennis wideout Laylon Spencer in the first-ever KBEC Sports Player of the Week poll.

When the dust had settled at 11:59 p.m. Thursday, Sullivan had collected 37,700 of the 81,122 votes (46.5%) in the online poll posted Tuesday afternoon.

Spencer, who briefly took the lead from Sullivan late in the afternoon Thursday, finished with 35,377 votes — just 2,323 votes shy with 43.6 percent of the vote.

Sullivan put together quite the gutty effort in week two during a come-from-behind 53-46 victory against Mesquite Poteet en route to his Player of the Week recognition.

The Waxahachie senior accounted for 451 total yards and six touchdowns during the win. He finished the game 23-for-34 through the air for 323 yards and five touchdowns, while also adding 14 carries for 128 yards and one score.

Sullivan will be presented with a commemorative KBEC Sports Player of the Week certificate at a date to be announced.

Avalon quarterback Rhett Newton (5,080 votes, 6.3%) and Red Oak running back CJ Palmer (2,965 votes, 3.7%) also received votes.
