Ellis County athletics will soon have a new home on the radio waves, as KBEC 1390AM/99.1 FM and KBEC Sports have announced plans to launch a one-hour weekly sports talk show.
The Press Box will debut at 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 4 on KBEC 1390AM/99.1FM. It can also be streamed online at KBEC.com or sports.KBEC.com, where it will be cataloged in podcast form, or by downloading the KBEC app from either the Google Play or Apple stores.
Brian Stevens and Seth Sims will serve as the hosts of the one-hour show that will focus primarily on Ellis County high school athletic programs.
Stevens is a 20-year Waxahachie resident and noted his passion for radio began at a young age while listening to Texas Rangers broadcast late into the night.
“I have a love for sports and radio, but also growing up and listening to guys like Mark Holtz with the Rangers, that’s just how I was introduced to sports,” Stevens said. “I have a passion for it. I don’t have a kid who plays, but I love being at the games and cheering them on.”
He works alongside his wife, Tiffany, at The Stevens Team at Legacy Realty, which serves all of Ellis County. They have three girls, Hannah, Emma and Ava.
Sims is a sixth-generation Ellis County resident and a former collegiate baseball player at Eastfield Junior College and Northeastern State University. He is also a 2011 graduate of Waxahachie High School, where he played under longtime head coach Tracy Wood.
Sims said his goal for the radio program is to give student-athletes, coaches and faithful fans a countywide avenue to talk about their local teams.
“I also hope it helps connect the community to the players and coaches and gives them a chance to learn a little more about what who they are and what they are about,” he added.
Sims and his wife, Kelsey, have one daughter, Charlie Jo.
The Press Box will air weekly on Monday from 6-7 p.m. It will feature recaps of the week that was, interviews with coaches and KBEC Sports Players of the Week, as well as special guests and previews for the week ahead.
The show is presented by Dr. Marc Roux and Dr. Josh McSpadden with Waxahachie Orthopedics and Sports Medicine and The Stevens Team at Legacy Realty. The show is also sponsored by FBM Construction.
KBEC currently operates as the longest-running independently owned radio station in Texas. After launching 64 years ago in 1955, the station first began its relationship with high school athletics by broadcasting daytime Waxahachie Indian baseball games in the 1960s. The station expanded its live high school sports coverage in 1989 to include night games and a 24-hour broadcast schedule.
KBEC currently broadcasts all Waxahachie Indian football games, as well as district home basketball games for the Lady Indians and Runnin’ Indians and a slate of Waxahachie Indian baseball games. Broadcast schedules can be found on kbec.com.
