Top-ranked Midlothian Heritage girls’ soccer dominates round 2, continues march toward state

Midlothian Heritage girls’ soccer is back where it belongs — in the postseason and driver’s seat to Georgetown.

The young Jaguar side proved its more-than-capable of a third state tournament run on Tuesday evening with a 6-nil victory against Burkburnett. The 4A Region I area championship win on Tuesday at RL Anderson Stadium in Mansfield comes on the heels of Heritage soundly defeating Fort Worth Eastern Hills in the bi-district round, 13-nil.

The latest (18-3-3) Heritage victory featured a pair of goals by Rose Giambruno-Fuge and Sydney Dickson, plus one each from Jules Burrows and Maddie Berumen. Kerry Scott (2), Brynn Pollock and Paisley Mabra (2) supplied the assists, while Tanner Sorenson, Maddie Miller and the Jaguar defense put up another shutout in goal.

“I think our team, as a whole, is coming together very well and gelling,” Heritage head coach Gerald Slovacek told KBEC Sports. “We are playing so unselfishly. The wind was crazy today, but we had a little plan and our ball movement was crazy good. It took a team effort.”

The defensive shutout is No. 16 on the season for the Jaguars and the sixth consecutive.

Heritage is now one win against Benbrook from the 4A Region I tournament. The day, time and location for the match against Benbrook is still undetermined.

For those new to the Heritage soccer program and our coverage — these girls are kind of good. And by kinda good, we mean they are the premier 4A program in the state under Slovacek.

The Jaguars ran their consecutive district win streak to 53 matches this season, finishing 12-0 in District 8-4A. Their last loss? That came against Kennedale on March 4, 2016, which was the program’s first varsity season.

Heritage then finished with undefeated district championships in 2017, ’18, ’19, ’20, ’21 and ’22. That’s 51 matches for anyone keeping count at home.

And that brings us to the playoff success.

The Jaguars won the first-ever team state title in Midlothian ISD history in 2018. They would’ve likely repeated in 2020 had COVID-19 not have canceled the state tournament.

This past season, Heritage returned to the pinnacle with a dominant 6-nil victory against Corpus Christi Calallen in the state title match. The win capped a 27-1 season and gave the program its second state title in three state tournaments (2020 excluded).

This year, the Jaguars are “hunting” rabbits during their pre-match lunches at random parks near the stadium. The 4A girls’ state title match is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Thursday, April 14.

Easter is April 17.

You do the math.
