Despite a sport now built on offense, it was a defensive effort that earned the support of voters following week 10 of the high school football season in Ellis County.
The Indian defense received 21,161 of the 38,233 votes (55.35%) to win the KBEC Sports Players of the Week poll.
Ennis quarterback Collin Drake finished second in the fan voting with 15,688 votes (41.03%). Jay Wilkerson (Midlothian Heritage) and Damyan Woodward (Milford) received 1,370 (3.58%) and 14 votes (0.04%), respectively.
Led by the Indian defense, Waxahachie pulled off an almost unthinkable Friday night at home against playoff-bound Mansfield Summit.
Waxahachie ultimately held Summit to 196 total yards, 10 first downs and just six points in the Indians 10-6 victory. The unit also recorded eight tackles-for-loss and eight quarterback pressures, which greatly aided the two Summit interceptions.
The win was the first-ever for Waxahachie in District 7-6A and first against a 6A opponent since moving up from Class 5A. It marked just the sixth time for the Indian defense to allow six points or fewer over the past decade.
Five of those instances came under the direction of longtime head coach David Ream over the 2009-2012 seasons. The last instance occurred in 2015, a 48-0 rout of Red Oak with Jon Kitna as the head coach.
The Indian defense will be presented with a commemorative KBEC Sports Player of the Week certificate at a date to be announced. A member of the defensive unit will also a special guest on The Locker Room, a weekly sports talk radio show that airs live from 6-7 p.m. on Monday nights on KBEC 1390AM/99.1FM.
The KBEC Sports Player of the Week poll is presented by Ellis Down Home and The Waxahachie Sun.
