The Waxahachie Iron Indians departed with 16 powerlifters on the old yellow dog Thursday morning with their eyes set on making a little program history.
And they did, as the team lifted its way to the fourth regional championship in program history.
Waxahachie entered the meet with the most lifters (16) in the Division I Region III field at Pine Tree High School in Longview. Three of those Indians — Dax Lott, Ethan Peace and Joseph Chavez — bested the competition and advanced to the state powerlifting meet to be held Saturday, March 28 at the Taylor County Expo Center in Abilene.
The trip to Abilene will be the second for Lott, a sophomore, and first for senior Joseph Chavez and Ethan Peace.
The trio of Peace, Lott and Chavez won the 114-, 148- and 242-pound classes, respectively, en route to their individual regional championship titles.
Lott broke the Division I Region III record for his weight class with a 350-pound bench and also set the new highwater-program mark with a 470-pound squat.
Those who placed third and above advanced to the state meet. As for the 13 other Iron Indians that helped the team win the regional title, they placed as follows:
Quincy Johnson — 181 pounds —4th place
Justin Cuellar — 242 pounds — 4th place
Denton Ross — 275 pounds — 4th place
Brent Martin — heavyweight — 4th place
Anthony Gallo — 181 pounds — 5th place
Jonathen Guerrero — 198 pounds — 5th place
Shawn Cherry — 220 pounds — 5th place
Kade Johnson — 181 pounds — 5th place
Michael Harris — 123 pounds — 6th place
Jordan Guerrero — 165 pounds —7th place
Alex Delgado — 275 pounds — 7th place
Jeremiah Falcon — 165 pounds —9th place
